Sant Baba Sohan Singh Ji
His Life & Times
Early Life and Childhood
Sant Baba Sohan Singh Ji was born in 1902 in Punjab, India, in a small village called Thathi Khara in the Rawalpindi district (now in Pakistan). From an early age, he displayed exceptional spiritual awareness and devotion to the Sikh faith. His parents, devout Sikhs themselves, instilled in him the values of humility, service, and spiritual dedication.
As a young boy, Baba Ji would often spend hours in meditation and prayer, showing an unusual connection to spiritual matters. He received his basic education in the village school, but his real education came from his immersion in Gurbani (Sikh scriptures) and the teachings of the Sikh Gurus.
By the age of 12, he had memorized significant portions of the Guru Granth Sahib, the Sikh holy book, and had begun to develop a deep understanding of its philosophical teachings. His childhood was marked by simplicity, discipline, and spiritual devotion – qualities that would define his entire life and service.
Journey to Malaysia
In the early 1930s, Sant Baba Sohan Singh Ji embarked on a transformative journey that would take him far from his homeland. Responding to what he described as a divine call, he traveled to Southeast Asia, eventually making his way to Malaya (now Malaysia). The British colonial era was still in full swing, and the Sikh community in Malaya was growing but needed spiritual guidance.
Upon arriving in Malaya, Baba Ji initially stayed at various gurdwaras (Sikh temples) across the country, offering his services as a granthi (priest) and spiritual teacher. His profound knowledge of Sikh scriptures, alongside his humble demeanor and compassionate nature, quickly earned him respect and admiration.
His journey eventually led him to Melaka, where he would establish his permanent residence and create the spiritual center that would become his legacy. During the Japanese occupation of Malaya (1941-1945), Baba Ji continued to provide spiritual and practical support to the Sikh community, helping many survive the hardships of war.

Baba Ji organized free medical camps and helped establish clinics in rural areas where healthcare was limited. His initiatives brought medical care to thousands who otherwise would have gone without treatment.
